Dr Aidan Kiely is an inspiring science teacher and school-leader who focuses on providing authentic, meaningful opportunities through which his students can learn science, use it in their daily lives, and embark on careers in science, innovation, and technology.
Aidan has prioritised continuous learning to improve his own teaching practice, by gathering and analysing data on learning outcomes for his students. He has focused on the theory and evidence for how to maximise motivation for students by giving them autonomy and agency in their learning. He has created a range of practical projects, such as restoration of a stream near the school, to involve students in real-world applications of science, and give them the satisfaction of achieving results.
To increase exposure to learning experiences beyond their community, Aidan has established relationships with scientists, people in industry, and community members who are experts in their fields, so that they can inspire and mentor students at Aorere College.
Aidan has demonstrated an innovative and inclusive approach to science education that has delivered results for students across his school and the broader school community.
Aidan has taken part in the Science Teaching Leadership Programme, run by the Royal Society Te Apārangi, which gave Aidan the opportunity to grow his leadership skills and hone his teaching approach.
